1. Consolidate services.
If you need a vaccination, a check-up and a screening test, ask if your doctor will see you for all three services in one office visit. Aside from the convenience, you may save by paying only one office co-pay.
2. Lower your prescription drug costs.
You can save big if you ask your doctor about using generic brand drugs, says Laurie Brubaker, head of integrated health and productivity with Aetna U.S. Healthcare. In most cases, they are as effective as the brand name but much less expensive
Another big saver: mail order medication. Often, a 90-day supply of medication obtained by mail costs the same as a 30-day supply at a pharmacy.
3. Check your bills carefully.
Errors in medical billing happen frequently. Watch out for these common overcharges: duplicate billing; billing for the wrong number of days in the hospital; room charges that are incorrect; billing code errors; services that were never provided; and charges for more operating room time than was used.
